Child support in the State of California is determined by California Family Code 4055. This formula takes into consideration such things as gross income, payroll deductions, and taxes when determining the amount of child support. The formula can be complicated by other factors such as child support to children from a previous marriage, the value of a closely held business, or the value of a high asset estate.
Child support in California follows a “guideline” for figuring out how much child support should be paid. If the parents cannot agree on child support, the judge will decide the child support amount based on the guideline calculation. Child support in California does not include college expenses for a child over 18 years old. Depending on the income of the parties, a party might be asked to pay for monthly addons to include music or other enrichment costs, or for tutoring of the child.
